Free ChatGPT Alternatives in 2026: What You Actually Get for Free

By Tobava Team  ·  October 15, 2026  ·  7 min read

Almost every major AI chatbot now has a free tier. That sounds like great news, and mostly it is. But "free" hides a lot of variation: some services cap how many messages you can send, some quietly switch you to a smaller model once you have used your allowance, and most use your conversations to train their models unless you turn that off.

This guide looks at the main free options as of October 2026, what each is genuinely good at, and the catches to know about before you pick one.

A note on limits: free-tier limits change often, sometimes month to month, and most providers do not publish exact numbers. We describe how each limit works rather than quoting a figure that may already be out of date. Check the provider's own help pages for today's numbers.

How free AI tiers usually work

Before comparing services, it helps to know the three ways free tiers are usually limited:

And the cost that is not about messages at all: on most free consumer plans, your chats can be used to improve the provider's models by default. We cover that in detail in Do AI chatbots train on your chats?

ChatGPT: the default for a reason

ChatGPT is still the chatbot most people try first, and its free tier is generous for everyday text chat. It is a strong generalist: drafting emails, explaining concepts, summarising and brainstorming. The limits mostly bite on the extras, such as image generation, file analysis and the most capable reasoning modes. If you only need plain conversation, the free tier may be all you need.

Claude: best for writing and long documents

Claude has a reputation for clear, natural writing and for handling long pieces of text well. It is a good choice if you want to work through a report, rewrite something in a particular tone, or get a careful explanation. The free tier's usage window is the main frustration: a long session can run out, and you wait a few hours for it to refill.

Gemini: best if you live in Google

Gemini's strength is its connection to the rest of Google, plus good handling of images and video. If your email, documents and calendar are already in Google, it can save real time. Free users get a capable model with limits that refresh during the day, and may be moved to a lighter model at busy times.

Copilot and Perplexity: answers with the web attached

Microsoft Copilot is built into Windows and Edge and leans on Bing for up-to-date information. Perplexity is designed around research: every answer comes with links to its sources, which makes it easy to check claims. Both are good picks when you care more about current facts than creative writing.

Tobava AI: chat and search in one place

Tobava AI is our own assistant, so take this section with that in mind. It combines chat with web search: ask a question, and it searches the web when it needs to and shows the sources it used. You can follow up, use voice, and switch to plain web search when you would rather see a list of results.

How the free tier works today: you can try one message without an account, and a free account gives you 10 messages a day, with your chats saved so you can open them on any device. Free answers come from open-source models. Paid plans, which will add GPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, are coming soon, and on those plans your chats are never used to train AI models.

How to choose

The honest answer is that there is no single best free chatbot. The models are close enough that the right one depends on what you do most. Try the same question in two or three of them and keep the one whose answers you trust. Our guide to ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok goes deeper on how the models differ.
